gatsby themed 1920s exhibition posters

Enthusiasts of Art Deco and 1920s nostalgia will soon have a new destination to explore in London’s cultural landscape. The London Transport Museum is preparing to launch “Art deco: the golden age of poster design,” a temporary exhibition opening on November 21, 2025, at the Global Poster Gallery. The collection, sponsored by Global, the Media & Entertainment Group, will remain on display until spring 2027, offering visitors nearly eighteen months to experience this celebration of 1920s and 1930s design heritage.

Step back in time as London Transport Museum unveils a stunning tribute to the golden age of Art Deco design.

The exhibition features more than 100 posters from the Art Deco period, showcasing the first graphic art posters displayed throughout the London Underground network. These historic artworks depict London landmarks and aspirational scenes of high living, created during the peak of the Art Deco design movement a century ago. The posters were originally commissioned to encourage travel and exploration on the Tube network and now represent a significant part of London Transport’s world-famous visual identity. Notable artists like Edward McKnight Kauffer and Jean Dupas contributed their innovative designs to this influential collection. Visitors will be able to enjoy the general admission to the museum, which is free for all.

Located in the heart of Covent Garden, the museum will display these treasures daily from 10am to 6pm, with last entry at 5pm. Visitors can also access the exhibition during adults-only after-dark events. The gallery includes video content documenting London transport stories spanning 200 years, complementing the existing transport heritage displays throughout the museum.

The exhibition celebrates 100 years of Art Deco style in London transport, highlighting how these posters were commissioned after World War I to shake off war austerity. They introduced pictorial posters as a new marketing tool that reflected changing fashions and the era’s glamour. The exhibition will also showcase exceptional pieces on loan from the Victoria and Albert Museum, including rare works that highlight the international influence of the Art Deco movement.

Several related events accompany the exhibition, including heritage train journeys on a 1938 Tube train on September 5-6, 2025, Museum Depot open days in late October, and a special “Museum late: art deco” event. The exhibition perfectly complements the Fitzgerald’s novel adaptation coming to the London Coliseum during the same period.

The exhibition aligns with other 1920s-themed cultural events in London, including the Great Gatsby Musical at the London Coliseum running from April to September 2025, creating a thorough Art Deco season throughout London in 2025-2026.
