crowded london bus route

London’s bus route 129 connects Lewisham Shopping Centre to Gallions Reach, spanning approximately 9-10 miles and taking around 70 minutes to complete the full journey. Operated by Go-Ahead London’s Blue Triangle, this route now uses zero emission battery electric double deck buses, offering a clean and modern travel experience through East London.

Enjoy a zero-emission journey across East London on route 129, connecting Lewisham to Gallions Reach in just 70 minutes.

The 129 has undergone significant transformation since its humble beginnings. When introduced in June 2006, it was merely a short 2-3 mile shuttle between Greenwich and North Greenwich bus station. The initial length of the route was just 2 miles, making it one of the shortest bus routes in London at the time. The route served Greenwich Millennium Village with single decker buses operated by Travel London. After changing operators to Abellio London in 2009, the route remained relatively minor until recent expansions. In 2014, the service was fully converted to double decker buses to accommodate growing passenger numbers.

Everything changed when the 129 was extended through the newly opened Silvertown Tunnel. This extension created a direct link from Lewisham to the Docklands, City Airport, and Beckton areas. The route now serves key locations including Greenwich Town Centre, National Maritime Museum, Cutty Sark, North Greenwich station, London City Airport, and Beckton before terminating at Gallions Reach.

What’s driving the sudden popularity is the free travel offered to all passengers using the route through the Silvertown Tunnel, scheduled to continue until at least April 2026. This has made the 129 an attractive alternative to other transportation options, including the now-defunct Dangleway cable car, offering similar views at no cost compared to the previous £7 fare.

Service frequency has increased to meet growing demand, with buses now running every 8 minutes on weekdays, every 10 minutes on Saturdays, and every 12 minutes on Sundays and evenings. First buses depart from Lewisham at 5:00 AM and from Gallions Reach at 4:45 AM daily.

As one of only three bus routes permitted through the Silvertown Tunnel, alongside route SL4 and a cycle shuttle, the 129 has transformed from an overlooked local service to a crucial cross-river link connecting previously isolated parts of East London. The bus terminates at Magellan Boulevard where passengers may notice the absence of a proper bus stop due to ongoing construction in the developing Thames-side area.
