starlight express global journey

The curtain will soon fall on London’s dazzling Starlight Express revival, with producers announcing a final closing date of May 3, 2026, at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre. This marks the seventh extension for the production, which first opened at the venue in June 2024. The final extension is being marketed as the “final call for boarding,” signaling the end of its London engagement before planned international tours.

The Wembley Park revival has transformed the venue into a specially designed Starlight Auditorium, featuring complex skating tracks that allow performers to race around, above, and through the audience. With a cast of approximately 40 performers, the production combines elements of a stadium concert and theme park ride, creating an immersive experience for theatergoers.

A revolutionary theatrical experience where performers on skates hurtle through the auditorium, blending concert spectacle with theme park thrills.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s music and Richard Stilgoe’s lyrics come to life in this newly staged version directed by Luke Sheppard, known for his work on &Juliet. The creative team includes Tim Hatley’s set design, Gabriella Slade’s futuristic costumes, and Ashley Nottingham’s choreography.

Veteran choreographer Arlene Phillips serves as creative dramaturg, bringing her connection to the property’s history into this modern interpretation.

The musical tells the story of Rusty, a steam train competing to become the world’s fastest engine, set against a backdrop of a child’s train set coming to life. Featuring popular songs like “AC/DC,” “Make Up My Heart,” and “Light at the End of the Tunnel,” the show runs 2 hours and 30 minutes, including a 15-minute interval. All children must be at least 3 years old to attend, with those under 16 requiring adult supervision.

Since its 1984 premiere, Starlight Express has entertained more than 30 million people worldwide. The current revival has received significant acclaim, winning seven WhatsOnStage Awards.

The production’s technical achievements at the state-of-the-art Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre, located just 12 minutes from Baker Street, have helped cement its reputation as “Andrew Lloyd Webber’s fastest show on earth” before it races toward new international destinations. The highly anticipated world tour will commence in spring 2027, offering international audiences the chance to experience this spectacular production. Producer Michael Harrison expressed enthusiasm for the show’s future, noting that the production has enjoyed nearly two years of successful performances in London by the time it concludes.
