The National English Ballet Theatre‘s innovative production, “Nebt’s Nutcracker,” brings a fresh and enchanting twist to the beloved holiday classic. Choreographed by NEBT Associate Choreographer Valentino Zucchetti, this contemporary interpretation skillfully blends tradition with playful innovation while maintaining the timeless story elements that audiences cherish.
Performed to Tchaikovsky’s original score, the production offers an enchanting experience designed for viewers of all ages. The reimagined production features elegant contemporary costuming that replaces traditional Nutcracker aesthetics. The visual design bridges classical ballet with modern sensibilities, while exhilarating choreography showcases an innovative movement vocabulary throughout the performance.
The narrative begins in a glitzy, modern-day Christmas party before shifting to snowy dreamscapes and pirate-filled adventures as part of Clara’s magical journey. Following successful performances at LAMDA venue in Hammersmith, the production continues to expand its reach. A UK tour is scheduled for the Autumn/Winter 2025-26 season, while recent performances in the Bahamas took place on December 12th and 13th at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar’s Grand Ballroom.
The Bahamas performances particularly featured excerpts of live Junkanoo performance, integrating local traditions with classical ballet elements. The cast features exceptional talent, including Royal Ballet principal Mayara Magri and choreographer Valentino Zucchetti himself performing alongside principal dancers in the Bahamas production. Local dance students were also integrated into these performances, creating an inclusive experience through cultural exchange. The UK tour begins at Radlett Centre, Hertfordshire on October 28th, 2025, bringing this magical reimagining to audiences across the country.
Critics have described the production as a “gem of joy,” appreciating how this bijou-scale production maintains an intimate theatrical experience while delivering impressive artistic impact. Despite its miniature scale, the production offers all the wonder and festive spirit expected from a Nutcracker performance. The minimalist approach to scenery has proven advantageous for the company’s touring capabilities, allowing them to maintain production quality across various venues. The show’s Arabian dance, performed by Leila Wright and Nicholas Isiah King, was particularly praised for its captivating execution.
The contemporary reimagining appeals to both modern and traditional audiences, establishing itself as a unique holiday tradition that celebrates imagination and Christmas wonder through innovative artistic vision.
