stansted airport expansion benefits

While passenger numbers are still recovering from the pandemic, Stansted Airport is moving forward with ambitious expansion plans targeting 51 million passengers annually by the 2040s. The airport, which received permission in 2021 to grow to 43 million passengers, expects to exceed pre-pandemic levels in the coming year. This growth will be achieved through using larger aircraft on the existing runway, without increasing the number of flights. The expansion will utilize the existing single runway to accommodate increased passenger traffic while maintaining current flight limits.

The current terminal operates at capacity during peak hours, prompting plans for a terminal extension. The expansion includes extending three bays towards the airfield within the current footprint, creating an extended departure lounge with new shops, bars, and restaurants. The airport will introduce advanced check-in technology to enhance the passenger experience from arrival to departure. This scheme replaces a previous arrivals building plan that was shelved after the pandemic, providing needed capacity in a shorter timeframe with no visual impacts to the public during construction. Additionally, the airport is focused on improving public transport access to ensure easy connectivity for travelers.

Terminal expansion responds to peak capacity needs with efficient internal modifications, delivering faster capacity improvements without disrupting passenger experience.

Economic benefits of the expansion are significant, with projections indicating the release of 4,500 new jobs through better use of existing facilities and an additional 5,000 jobs as passenger numbers approach 43 million. The airport’s Gross Value Added is expected to double to £2 billion per annum, with specific targets for local employment and spending during construction phases. The expansion aligns with the airport’s commitment to fostering regional economy growth as outlined in their Sustainable Development Plan.

Major airlines including Emirates, Ryanair, and Jet2.com have backed the expansion plans, with additional support from Pegasus, AJet, and Turkish Airlines. The growth will allow greater route flexibility and destination choices for passengers, strengthening the airport’s international competitiveness.

Infrastructure improvements include enhancements to M11 Junction 8 to reduce congestion, funding for local bus services and roads, and measures to tackle fly-parking. The airport aims to have 50% of passenger journeys made by public transport.

These developments align with Stansted’s Sustainable Development Plan, a 20-year strategy that balances growth ambitions with sustainability goals while supporting local community initiatives and evaluating economic impacts.
