intimate rehearsal layers revealed

The UK premiere rehearsals of “Beautiful Little Fool” are currently underway at Southwark Playhouse Borough, setting the stage for its anticipated world premiere run from January 15 to February 28, 2026.

Director Michael Greif, known for acclaimed musicals such as “Dear Evan Hansen,” “Next to Normal,” and “Rent,” is leading the creative process that explores the lives of Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald through their daughter Scottie’s perspective.

David Hunter has stepped into the role of F. Scott Fitzgerald, replacing previously announced Declan Bennett due to scheduling conflicts.

Casting change sees David Hunter taking over as F. Scott Fitzgerald after Declan Bennett’s departure due to schedule conflicts.

Hunter brings valuable experience from his work in “Waitress,” “Once,” and “Kinky Boots” to the rehearsal room. He joins Lauren Ward as Scottie and Hannah Corneau as Zelda, forming the central trio of the production.

Greif has publicly praised Hunter’s “heart, warmth and musical intelligence” as essential qualities for portraying the famous author.

The rehearsal process centers on Scottie’s journey of rediscovering her parents’ lives and writings, providing a framework for exploring themes of memory and legacy.

The production examines the “brilliant and tempestuous” relationship between Zelda and F. Scott, highlighting their creativity, volatility, and experiences with fame.

Content advisories note the inclusion of alcoholism themes and strong language, with a 12+ age recommendation.

Hannah Corneau, who also stars as Zelda, composed the music and lyrics for the production.

The score is described as lush and emotionally charged, with songs like “So Alive” and “One Night in July” previously established through a New York-recorded concept album.

Jerome van den Berghe is adapting these orchestrations for the London staging as musical director.

The ensemble cast includes David Austin-Barnes, Amy Parker, and Jasmine Hackett, who are preparing multi-role vocal tracks to support the principal storytelling.

Shankho Chaudhuri’s set design facilitates fluid movement between time periods and locations, complementing Mona Mansour’s book that juxtaposes the Fitzgeralds’ public glamour with the private costs of their artistic ambitions and marriage.

The production is backed by an experienced producing team that includes Mark Cortale and Jonathan Murray, bringing substantial theatrical expertise to this world premiere production.

The production team has scheduled the national press night for Thursday, January 22, 2026, a week after opening, to allow the cast to settle into their performances.

The sound design by Domnic Bilkey will enhance the period atmosphere while ensuring the musical performances are captured with clarity throughout the venue.
