London stands as a paradise for plant-based dining enthusiasts, having recently claimed the top spot on HappyCow’s 2025 list of the most vegan-friendly cities worldwide. Outranking Berlin, which holds the second position, London’s central area alone boasts an impressive 54 fully vegan restaurants and more than 285 vegan businesses, including cafés, bakeries, caterers, and specialty shops.
London reigns supreme as the global vegan capital, surpassing Berlin with its extraordinary concentration of plant-based dining options.
The city offers a staggering 3,620 vegan-friendly restaurant listings throughout its various neighborhoods, reflecting a 12% increase in plant-based establishments since HappyCow’s previous report.
The capital’s plant-based dining scene continues to thrive with 175 dedicated vegan establishments and 159 vegetarian venues operating across the city. This remarkable density of meat-free options surpasses the combined total of vegan and vegetarian restaurants in all other top UK vegan-friendly cities. HappyCow’s ranking methodology takes into account not only the number and density of vegan establishments but also factors such as food accessibility, community engagement, and general understanding of veganism among the population. Despite challenging economic conditions affecting vegan businesses globally between 2023 and 2024, London’s scene has shown remarkable resilience.
London’s status as the UK’s vegan capital is further supported by demographics showing that 35% of residents identify as vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, or plan to adopt these dietary choices. This widespread acceptance has fostered significant growth in fine dining options, with Plates becoming the first fully vegan UK restaurant to receive a Michelin star. The city has maintained the largest share of vegans at 3.67% of its population as of 2022, significantly above the national average. Other notable upscale venues include Studio Gauthier, Gauthier Soho, Bōkan 37, and The Landmark London’s Winter Garden.
For casual dining experiences, long-established eateries like Mildreds offer globally inspired plant-based menus, while newer ventures such as Unity Diner, Temple of Seitan, Tofu Vegan, and Jam Delish provide everything from comfort food to modern Caribbean cuisine. Many restaurants emphasize low-waste practices alongside delivering flavorful and innovative menu options.
Specialized cuisine types are well-represented through venues like Bubala with its Middle Eastern small plates, Decimo’s Spanish-Mexican fusion, Holy Carrot’s vegetable-forward low-waste cooking, and Tendril’s globally influenced offerings in the West End.
