2026 royal mint coins

Numismatic enthusiasts will have new treasures to collect in 2026 as the Royal Mint reveals its Annual Sets featuring commemorative coins honoring both the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) and Queen Elizabeth II. These special coins, authorized through Royal Proclamation in accordance with the Coinage Act 1971, form part of a broader collection that includes tributes to HMS Beagle, Grand Prix in Britain, and The King’s Trust.

The Queen Elizabeth II commemorative £5 coin, designed by Timothy Noad, will be struck in 916.67 gold alloy, weighing 39.94 grams with a 38.61mm diameter. This 22-carat gold standard reflects a 500-year tradition established by Henry VIII’s 1526 coinage reforms. The “Portraits of a Queen” series includes a Second Effigy design available in Silver Proof Piedfort, limited to just 1,500 editions.

A royal heritage in gold – honoring Queen Elizabeth II through numismatic artistry established five centuries ago.

Notably, the Gold Proof editions utilize 100% recycled gold in production, demonstrating the Royal Mint’s commitment to sustainability while maintaining precise precious metal content. The obverse designer Martin Jennings has created coins featuring innovative security elements, including a latent image on the obverse that alternates between a Tudor Crown, the King’s chosen royal cypher, and a Tudor Rose symbol. The 2026 Sovereign will also showcase Benedetto Pistrucci’s iconic St George slaying the dragon design on its reverse, continuing a prestigious numismatic tradition.

The ZSL commemorative coins celebrate the Zoological Society of London’s conservation legacy and wildlife heritage. These coins, alongside the other themed designs, are available in multiple annual set options, including gold proof, silver proof, and Brilliant Uncirculated Definitive Coin Sets containing standard circulation denominations. The Brilliant Uncirculated Set features the quality designation of Brilliant Uncirculated as indicated by product code BB26G1C in the Royal Mint’s catalog.

Collectors can choose from various presentation packages designed for long-term display and preservation. The sets offer options for both serious numismatists seeking premium collectibles and those looking to start or grow their collections with thematic organization.

The 2026 Annual Sets combine historical significance with modern security protocols, featuring micro-text laden reverse designs and half-tone patterns on the obverse for authentication. Each coin represents an important aspect of British heritage, from royal legacy to scientific achievement, conservation efforts, and sporting history, making them valuable additions to any collection.
