After a decade-long hiatus, Primark has announced its first new London store, which will open at Wimbledon Quarter in the former Debenhams unit. The popular retailer plans to begin construction in the coming months, with doors expected to open to shoppers in late 2026 or early 2027. This announcement coincidentally aligns with Primark’s 40th anniversary in the capital, making it a significant milestone for the company.
The new Wimbledon location will feature 24,000 square feet of selling space on the ground floor. Customers can expect Primark’s full range of merchandise, including menswear, womenswear, children’s clothing, beauty products, and homeware items. The store will occupy part of what was previously a Debenhams department store, giving new life to this retail space. The development is expected to bring enhanced shopping choice to Wimbledon residents who have shown high demand for the retailer.
Philippa Nibbs, Primark’s Director of Sales for London and the South East, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion, noting that the company had received numerous requests over the years to open a store in Wimbledon. Until the new location opens, she directed customers to visit nearby existing stores in Wandsworth and Tooting.
Currently, Primark operates 11 stores across London, including two prominent locations on Oxford Street. The expansion represents Primark’s commitment to growing its market share gains despite challenging retail conditions. The retailer’s London presence extends to areas such as Westfield London, Hackney, Lewisham, Wood Green, and Charlton, with a total of 30 stores within the M25 area. The brand’s London journey began in 1986 with its first store in Woolwich.
The new Primark will strengthen the retail offering at Wimbledon Quarter, joining other established brands like M&S, Oliver Bonas, Hotel Chocolat, and Rituals. The arrival of Primark is expected to create new job opportunities for local residents. Property advisors Cushman & Wakefield and P-Three worked on the deal, with Toby Sykes commenting that Primark will enhance the diverse retail mix in the area.
Recent performance data shows promising results for the retailer, with UK sales growth of 3% and like-for-like growth of 1.7% in the 16 weeks to January 3, 2026, despite a challenging clothing market.
