pippin show at upstairs

Chromolume Productions transforms the intimate space of Upstairs at the Gatehouse into a world of circus-inspired magic with their ambitious staging of “Pippin.” Running from December 11, 2025, through January 11, 2026, this Highgate production breathes fresh life into Stephen Schwartz’s beloved musical through Amanda Noar‘s Fosse-influenced direction and choreography.

Circus magic meets Fosse flair as Chromolume breathes new life into Schwartz’s “Pippin” at Gatehouse’s intimate Highgate space.

The two-hour performance features a standout cast led by Emily Friberg as the Leading Player and Lewis Edgar as Pippin, both receiving critical acclaim for their vocal performances and character work. Mia Quimpo makes her professional debut as Catherine, joining Helena Caldas (Fastrada) and Oliver Wood (Charles) in completing the principal ensemble.

Hannah Danson’s set and costume design draws heavily on tarot and circus imagery, creating a visually striking backdrop for the production. The creative team also enlisted consultant Martin T Hart for stage magic elements that enhance the show’s theatrical flair. Under Harry Style’s musical direction, Schwartz’s score gains depth and distinctive identity even in this smaller venue setting.

Critics have awarded the production mostly positive reviews, with multiple regional outlets giving three and four-star ratings. Reviewers consistently praise the powerhouse vocals and strong ensemble singing as particular highlights. Act Two delivers a more refined experience compared to the sometimes disjointed tone of the opening act. Following the success of recent productions like A Christmas Carol and Hauntings, this version of Pippin continues the venue’s tradition of high-quality seasonal offerings.

While some note occasional uneven moments in performance or production polish, the ambitious staging in such a small pub-theatre space has impressed most critics.

The production carries an age guidance of 13+, making it suitable for teenage and adult audiences. The seasonal Christmas/New Year programming slot aims to attract holiday theatre-goers looking for entertainment during the festive period. Clare Brice’s rendition of “No Time At All” has become a particular audience favorite, with her engaging performance encouraging sing-along participation.

Tickets are currently available through the Upstairs at the Gatehouse box office. Theatre fans interested in experiencing this circus-inspired reimagining of the Broadway classic should make plans to attend before the production concludes its run on January 11, 2026.

The intimate venue setting provides audiences with a close-up view of the theatrical magic that has been impressing Highgate audiences.
