Nicknamed the “Christmas Treenado,” this towering structure consists of 70 individual trees entwined together to form a spiraling installation that climbs up a staircase. Created by design studio Darling and Edge, the tree represents the agency’s creative, energetic approach to the holiday season.
The Shoreditch tree greatly surpasses London’s traditionally recognized Christmas centerpiece in Trafalgar Square, which measures approximately 66 feet (20 metres) in height. To put the Shoreditch tree’s impressive stature in perspective, it reaches the equivalent height of seven double-decker buses stacked vertically. The tree features distinctive light-up stars and an intentionally chaotic design that reflects the advertising agency’s unconventional spirit.
Trafalgar Square’s Norwegian spruce, despite being overshadowed in size, maintains its historical significance. This tree represents a 78-year tradition, gifted annually from Oslo since 1947 as a token of Norway’s gratitude for British support during World War II. Each year, a 50 to 60-year-old Norway spruce is carefully selected from forests near Oslo, cut in a ceremony attended by dignitaries, and transported to London by sea and road. The tree is erected using a hydraulic crane and decorated with vertical strings of lights in traditional Norwegian style.
The Eastern City Tree at Pan Pacific London previously held the title of London’s tallest Christmas tree at 67 feet (20.4 metres). Created by The Christmas Decorators, this elaborate display features 65,000 lights and 800 baubles. Visitors attempting to view this spectacular tree may occasionally encounter access issues due to high traffic volumes during peak holiday periods.
Other notable trees around London include St Pancras Station’s 36-foot themed tree, Coal Drops Yard’s 50-foot traditional tree, and Covent Garden’s twinkling light-covered attraction.
London’s Christmas trees offer distinct characteristics beyond mere size.
