electric tour boat journey

As London continues to embrace greener transportation options, a cutting-edge electric tour boat named Silver Raven has begun operating on the River Thames. This 39-meter aluminum catamaran represents a significant milestone in maritime tourism, offering zero-emission journeys for up to 250 passengers per trip. The vessel, also known as Thames Explorer for Woods’ Silver Fleet, was purpose-built to provide eco-friendly sightseeing experiences while maintaining comfort and style.

The Silver Raven operates a 40-minute circular guided river tour, departing from and returning to Tower Bridge Quay. Passengers enjoy panoramic views from the single-deck layout, which features awning-shaded areas, LED lighting, and eco-leather seating. The boat’s interiors blend modern amenities with a 1920s/30s aesthetic, incorporating British-made materials such as Kidderminster wool carpet and bespoke upholstery. The vessel features a stunning hammered English pewter bar that adds to its sophisticated ambiance. The interior design was crafted by Kate Woods, continuing the Woods family’s five-generation history as Thames Watermen. Each tour allows guests to experience the beauty of the Thames River dinner cruises, showcasing the stunning scenery along the way.

Experience London’s iconic waterfront during a 40-minute journey aboard Silver Raven, where vintage elegance meets sustainable innovation.

Powering this innovative vessel is an all-battery electric drive train engineered with UK suppliers including VULKAN/Vulkan UK. The large battery bank, reported to be 720 kW, enables the boat to complete its routes while maintaining a zero-emission profile. Between tours, the Silver Raven connects to a 2 MW shore-charging facility at Tower Bridge Quay for rapid recharging. The tour experience is enhanced with professional narration by British actor Martha Howe-Douglas, who delivers historical facts with a touch of British humor.

The Tower of London River Tour takes passengers past iconic landmarks including Tower Bridge, the Palace of Westminster, Tate Modern, and the London Eye. This route is operated in exclusive collaboration with Historic Royal Palaces, who helped develop the guided storytelling content that accompanies each journey.

Built by Pendennis Shipyard in Cornwall with naval architecture by One2Three Naval Architects, the Silver Raven represents a significant step toward decarbonizing UK domestic maritime tourism. The project received support from the UK government’s Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition and various industry partnerships.

With plans to carry approximately 500,000 passengers annually, the Silver Raven demonstrates how sustainable technology can enhance traditional tourism experiences while reducing riverine air and noise pollution in one of the world’s most historic waterways.
