london s light and sound festival

As winter darkness envelops London this January, a spectacular new festival of light and sound will illuminate the City of London for two evenings only. The free event will transform historic landmarks, hidden gardens, and striking façades across the Culture Mile area on Thursday 29 and Friday 30 January 2026, from 5:30pm to 8:30pm each night.

Visitors can wander through the City’s ancient streets discovering more than a dozen artworks that explore the dialogue between London’s past and present. The festival creates a unique conversation between Roman ruins and contemporary towers through color, music, and storytelling. No tickets or booking are required; simply turn up and follow a self-guided route through five key locations. Additionally, night walks along the illuminated river can enhance your experience of the festival’s artistry.

Experience London’s evolving story as ancient streets and modern architecture converse through light, sound, and imagination.

Guildhall Yard will serve as a centerpiece with a large-scale projection sequence illuminating one of the City’s most historic sites. Here, a live singer wearing an audio-responsive costume will perform an experimental fusion of opera and electronic music against the backdrop of the medieval Guildhall.

Other locations include St Alphage London Wall & Garden hosting live music performances, while Salters’ Garden offers a sonic installation with speakers hidden among the greenery to guide visitors along their journey.

St Giles’ Cripplegate presents an otherworldly extended reality installation combining sound, light, and virtual reality technology. The immersive VR artwork “Array Infinitive” by Leslie Deere allows visitors to use their body as instrument to create virtual compositions. At Milton Court, visual lightworks reflect on inner-city life and human experience.

The festival is presented by Guildhall Production Studio and Guildhall School of Music & Drama, featuring emerging artists, designers, and performers. This collaboration with the Culture Mile Business Improvement District and City of London Corporation’s Culture Team is supported by the Destination City Partnership Fund.

Seasonal food and drink will be available throughout the event, making it a perfect evening activity for families seeking to add warmth and color to grey January evenings.

The festival invites everyone to celebrate the Square Mile as a place of imagination, culture, and connection during these two special nights. The event combines multi-sensory experiences aimed at engaging diverse audiences from city workers to families and night-time explorers. Visitors interested in hosting similar arts events can seek guidance from the Arts and Events Team at The Brady Arts and Community Centre.
