dazzling divisive musical adaptation

How does a beloved film about the cutthroat world of fashion transform into a musical extravaganza? For Elton John, the journey from screen to stage for “The Devil Wears Prada” has been a carefully orchestrated process, blending his original score with lyrics by Shaina Taub and Mark Sonnenblick to create a theatrical experience that’s breaking box office records.

The musical adaptation of Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel and the 2006 film starring Meryl Streep has taken its time reaching audiences. Following a Chicago pre-Broadway run in 2022, Elton John candidly acknowledged in interviews that the show needed another year of development.

Patient artistry defines “The Devil Wears Prada” musical’s journey, with Elton John embracing necessary development time after its Chicago debut.

This patience appears to have paid off, with the production now set for its UK premiere at Theatre Royal Plymouth before opening at London’s Dominion Theatre in October 2024.

Led by Vanessa Williams as the formidable Miranda Priestly and Georgie Buckland as Andy Sachs, the production explores familiar themes of ambition and personal growth within the high-pressure fashion magazine setting.

Director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell, known for hits like “Kinky Boots” and “Legally Blonde,” brings his signature style to the production. The musical features an impressive score by Elton John with lyrics by Shaina Taub that brings fresh energy to this fashion-world narrative.

The musical’s impact has been immediate, becoming the fastest-selling show in Dominion Theatre history. Critics have described it as “dressed to impress” and “theatrical haute couture,” though reactions remain divided on how successfully the adaptation captures the film’s magic.

The recently released cast recording offers 18 tracks, including standouts like “I Mean Business” and “House Of Miranda,” plus two original demos by Elton John himself. Fans can now enjoy “Miranda Girl” sung by Georgie Buckland as the first released track with an accompanying video.

The creative team believes this production perfectly suits musical adaptation, with Elton John stating that the best musicals leave audiences feeling uplifted and emotionally satisfied.

A World AIDS Day gala performance raised over £750,000 for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, attracting fashion royalty including Anna Wintour and Donatella Versace.

For fans of the original film, which grossed over $326 million worldwide, this musical adaptation provides a fresh perspective on a familiar story, reimagined through Elton John’s distinctive musical lens.
