dachshunds parade in costumes

A festive spectacle unfolded in central London as hundreds of dachshunds paraded through Hyde Park on Sunday, December 14, for the annual Christmas Sausage Walk. The event, which took place in the Kensington Gardens area on the third Advent Sunday, featured sausage dogs dressed in cozy knits, sparkly bobbles, Santa hats, and festive coats.

This gathering followed a postponed Halloween Sausage Walk, which required an events license due to its growing popularity. The tradition began eight years ago when Ana Rodriguez sought to socialize her mini dachshund Winston with other dogs. Winston, now a canine internet celebrity who has appeared on The Last Leg, organizes these walks which have evolved into opportunities for dachshunds to meet, play, and compete in best-dressed contests.

The Christmas parade showcased an array of festive attire including Santa-themed coats, red coats with silver tinsel, antlers, and fleeces. Nicky Bailey, a 48-year-old interior designer from West London, brought three sausage dogs: Una and her 19-week-old puppies Ember and Finnegan, all wearing matching red coats. The gathering provided a wonderful opportunity for owners to create lasting connections within the dachshund community.

Jon Rummins attended with his three-year-old dachshund Bear, who sported a Santa coat, while another participant, a horse rider, brought her dog Sausage (renamed from Slinky) wearing a brown-white spotted fleece with antlers. Many owners noted their dachshunds’ tendency to display Napoleon syndrome when encountering larger dogs. The event created a warm atmosphere where owners shared amusing anecdotes about their pets’ distinctive personalities and behaviors.

Activities included a best-dressed dachshund competition with awards for Best Group, Cutest, and Most Original. Dogs socialized, played, and strained excitedly at their leashes while owners compared notes on their pets’ behaviors and traits.

For the second consecutive year, the event supported two rescue dog charities. Owners described their dachshunds as naughty, stubborn, affectionate, and funny with bags of character.

The phenomenon extends beyond London, with similar events occurring elsewhere, including a parade of over 900 dachshunds in Stockholm, demonstrating the growing popularity of these festive canine gatherings.
