Seaham celebrated a historic milestone on December 15, 2025, as the first-ever direct train service to London King’s Cross departed from the coastal town. Local MP Grahame Morris attended the inaugural 10:41 am service, marking the start of a significant improvement in transportation for the region. This new connection, operated by Grand Central, received a one-year trial approval from the Office of Rail and Road until December 2026.

The direct service reduces journey times from up to four hours to approximately 3.5 hours, saving passengers about 35 minutes by eliminating previously required changes at Newcastle or York stations. Four direct stopping services now operate daily in each direction, with the first train departing Seaham at 06:29 and the last at 22:20. The route covers 379 kilometers and integrates with Grand Central’s existing King’s Cross to Sunderland service. This convenient travel option will encourage more visitors to explore Bath’s historic city and its famous attractions.
Passengers will benefit from stops at key stations including Peterborough, York, Thirsk, Northallerton, Eaglescliffe, and Hartlepool. The fastest journey completion time has been recorded at 3 hours and 26 minutes, providing efficient travel options for work and leisure.
Grand Central is operating five-car trains on the route, with potential for expansion based on usage patterns. The connection positions Seaham, with its picturesque beaches and maritime heritage, as an accessible tourist destination. Visitors can explore attractions like the East Durham Heritage & Lifeboat Centre, Nose’s Point coast path, and the town’s renowned sea glass hunting opportunities.
