Numerous shoppers are turning to high-end retail experiences this festive season, as the UK luxury market maintains its dominant position in Europe. London, in particular, continues to be the continent’s premier luxury shopping destination, drawing celebrities and discerning shoppers alike. This comes as UK Christmas spending is projected to reach £24.6 billion, representing a 3.5% increase from 2024, with festive-specific spending accounting for £22.94 billion of that total. Fashion remains the leading growth sector in festive luxury retail, with clothing sales showing a robust 3.8% increase when adjusted for inflation. Celebrities frequently visit Harrods and Selfridges, where personal shopping services offer exclusive access to limited collections away from public view. These establishments have reported stronger performance than general retail, which has seen November card spending decrease by 1.1% year-over-year.

Health and beauty products have overtaken clothing and technology as the third priority for younger shoppers, particularly in the luxury segment. Brands like Jo Malone and Space NK attract notable figures seeking personalized fragrances and premium cosmetics. Additionally, many shoppers are indulging in classic British dishes from high-end retailers that offer gourmet food options. Consumer spending has been impacted by widespread cost-of-living pressures through the pre-Christmas period. Recent data shows that approximately 40% of households plan to use loyalty points and vouchers for their Christmas shopping.

With the average adult spending £461 this Christmas, younger adults between 18-24 years are the biggest spenders, averaging £541 per person. Women tend to spend more on festive purchases than men, with average expenditures of £471 and £452 respectively. Despite 64% of purchases occurring online—the highest level since the pandemic—in-store luxury retail experiences remain essential for celebrity shopping, offering discretion and personalized service.

Many luxury retailers now provide appointment-only shopping experiences, allowing famous clientele to browse without public attention. Bond Street and Sloane Street boutiques often extend their hours for private shopping sessions after closing. Food and drink represent the largest outlay in festive spending, with 27% of consumers planning to spend more in this category. High-end food halls at Fortnum & Mason and Harvey Nichols have become celebrity favorites for gourmet hampers and rare spirits.

With 46% of shoppers having finished their gift purchasing before December, luxury retailers have responded by revealing their Christmas collections earlier, catering to those seeking exclusive, limited-edition items before they sell out.
