wimbledon pub christmas feast

Every Christmas Day, The Alexandra pub in Wimbledon opens its doors to those who would otherwise spend the holiday alone. Located at 33 Wimbledon Hill Road, this Young’s pub transforms into a haven of warmth and community from 12pm to 3pm on December 25th. The tradition, started in 2010 by proprietors Mick and Sarah Dore, has evolved from offering free pints to providing complete turkey dinners.

The rules are simple: show up between midday and 3pm if you’re spending Christmas alone. No booking is required, but the invitation is strictly for solo attendees. Families and groups are asked to find other venues, as the purpose is to create space for those truly in need of company during the holiday. Just like The Garratt And Gauge Wimbledon, The Alexandra offers a unique way to experience festive celebrations during the holiday season. During peak times, the pub may experience high traffic which could affect their online reservation system.

Join us on Christmas Day if you’re alone – no booking needed. Solo attendees only, as we reserve this space for those needing holiday company.

What began as a small gesture 15 years ago has grown into a significant community event. In 2022, the pub served 186 solo diners who came from various backgrounds. The guest list typically includes au pairs, retail workers, NHS staff, and pensioners, all sharing Christmas spirit together in the cozy, festively decorated pub.

The Alexandra’s Green Bar provides an intimate setting that can accommodate 30 seated or 50 standing guests. The fireside atmosphere creates a homey environment where strangers become friends over a meal. Local cab drivers often help transport attendees to guarantee no one misses out due to transportation issues.

Community involvement makes this event possible. Local shops and residents donate gifts and food, while volunteers serve as waitstaff. Schoolchildren prepare selection boxes, suppliers provide ingredients at reduced costs or for free, and neighbors contribute homemade cakes and mince pies. The dinner offers inclusive menu options for vegetarians and vegans to ensure everyone can enjoy the meal regardless of dietary preferences.

The 2025 Christmas Day event will follow the same format, with volunteers arriving at 11am to prepare for the midday opening. Guests can expect complimentary roast dinners with all the trimmings, beer, and plenty of hugs.

The Alexandra’s Christmas tradition embodies the true spirit of the holiday – creating connection and community for those who need it most.
