haunting theatrical experience unfolds

Whispers, crackles, and the uncomfortable feeling of something breathing down your neck characterize Jamie Armitage’s innovative horror play “A Ghost In Your Ear.” Set within the confined space of a sound-recording studio, this production transforms the traditional theatrical experience by equipping audience members with headphones that deliver chilling binaural sound effects.

The narrative employs a “story within a story” structure, following an actor recording a ghost story audiobook. As the performance progresses, the horrors from the pages seem to escape into the studio itself, blurring the lines between fiction and reality. This uncertainty—whether the events stem from actual ghosts, the story being recorded, or the actor’s internal fears—creates the core tension of the piece.

Developed in collaboration with sound design specialists Ben and Max Ringham, the production utilizes three-dimensional audio technology to place sounds all around the audience. This immersive approach intensifies the psychological dread and jump scares, creating an intimate horror experience that relies heavily on sonic design rather than visual elements.

George Blagden leads the cast, delivering approximately 95% of the lines in a demanding central performance. His work is supported by Jonathan Livingstone and a creative team that includes Gurnesha Bola as dramaturg, Anisha Fields handling set and costume design, and Ben Jacobs creating the lighting that enhances the claustrophobic atmosphere.

Co-produced by HFH Productions and Hampstead Theatre, the play is staged in the intimate Downstairs space, where the audience’s proximity to the performer heightens the personal impact of each scare. The production comes with an explicit health warning, signaling its intention to genuinely frighten attendees. The show runs from December 6, 2025 to January 24, 2026, representing the writer-director’s follow-up to his acclaimed 2024 hit “An Interrogation.” The show’s cutting-edge sound technology creates a truly terrifying experience that engages all the senses. Audiences can experience this groundbreaking theatrical horror until January 31, 2026, following an extended run due to popular demand.

“A Ghost In Your Ear” explores how the past haunts the present, whether through memory, secrecy, or supernatural forces. By positioning the audience as eavesdroppers on a recording session, the play creates a hyper-focused attention on sonic details, minimizing distractions and maximizing the effectiveness of its psychological and atmospheric horror.
