aldgate s winter wonderland experience

The enchanting Aldgate Winter Festival returns for its ninth edition on Thursday 4th and Friday 5th December 2025, transforming Aldgate Square into a festive celebration. This popular community event promises music, free festive foods, parades, workshops, and many other activities for visitors of all ages to enjoy.

The festivities begin on Thursday 4th December with the much-anticipated Christmas tree and lights switch-on ceremony at 5pm. From 12noon until 2pm, attendees can enjoy complimentary mulled wine, hot chocolate, and pastries while watching live performances on The Aldgate Stage. The performances continue from 12noon to 2:30pm and resume from 3:30pm until 7pm, creating a festive atmosphere in Aldgate Square. Visitors can also take advantage of free attractions in London to enhance their experience during the holiday season.

Join us on Thursday 4th December for the tree lighting at 5pm, with festive refreshments and performances throughout the day.

Friday 5th December marks the main event day, running from 3:30pm until 8:00pm. The iconic Lantern Parade begins at 5pm, winding through the streets of Aldgate with illuminated displays. Following the parade, a community feast sponsored by Howden Group will be provided free of charge from 6pm. Throughout the evening, The Aldgate Stage will feature various live performances to entertain the crowds. Similar to London’s famous Winter Wonderland that began as a modest event in 2007, the Aldgate Festival has grown into a beloved local Christmas tradition.

Those interested in participating more actively can attend creative workshops scheduled for Tuesday 2nd December. Visitors should note that last entry for activities is typically 30 minutes before closing time. Additionally, a special three-week Lantern Trail featuring giant lanterns made by local primary schools will be on display until 17th December, highlighting community involvement in the festival. For visitors wanting to experience more winter festivities, the nearby Hyde Park Winter Wonderland offers over 150 rides and attractions from November 14, 2025, through January 1, 2026.

The entire event is centered in Aldgate Square in east London, easily accessible via nearby Tube stations including Aldgate East. All festivities are open to the public with free entry to many elements throughout the two-day celebration.

For those planning to attend, the Lantern Parade, community feast, and tree lighting ceremony are particularly significant highlights. The festival successfully combines festive traditions with community spirit, offering an extensive winter celebration that showcases local talent and promotes community participation in the heart of Aldgate.
