chinese new year celebration

As London prepares to welcome the Year of the Snake in 2025, the city will host its spectacular Chinese New Year celebrations, the largest of their kind outside Asia. The festivities will officially begin on Wednesday, January 29, marking the start of the Chinese New Year, with the main celebrations taking place on Saturday, February 1, and Sunday, February 2.

The highlight of the celebrations is the grand parade on Sunday, February 2, starting at 10am from the east side of Trafalgar Square. The procession will move along Charing Cross Road to Shaftesbury Avenue before dispersing in Chinatown around 11:45am. Spectators can witness Europe’s largest gathering of Chinese dragons and lions, with over 50 teams participating alongside luminescent floats, flags, traditional drummers, and dancers.

Following the parade, Trafalgar Square will transform into the main hub of activities from 12pm to 6pm. The central stage will host ceremonial speeches, the traditional Lions’ Eye-Dotting Ceremony, flying lion dances, martial arts displays, and performances by Chinese artists. The day will conclude with an impressive pyrotechnic display at 6pm, creating a magical finale to the celebrations. Visitors can enjoy a variety of stalls, exhibitions, and cultural demonstrations throughout the day, which are similar to those found at free cultural events across the city.

Chinatown will buzz with activity as lion dancers weave through Gerrard Street, Macclesfield Street, Wardour Street, Leicester Street, and Lisle Street from noon onwards. The entire event is completely free to attend, making it accessible for everyone to enjoy the cultural festivities. Over 50 restaurants, bars, and shops will offer authentic cultural dishes, while festive stalls on Gerrard Place and Newport Court provide traditional treats and souvenirs. Food enthusiasts can also visit restaurants like IVY ASIA, which will be offering special Lunar Dragon Set Menu options from January 15 to February 28.

Additional venues include Leicester Square, which will host family-friendly cultural workshops from 12pm to 5pm, and community stages on Dean Street and Shaftesbury Avenue. Dear Asia in Aldgate offers special events including a mahjong workshop on January 25 and a Year of the Snake celebration on January 29.

The Year of the Snake, also called the Year of the Wood Snake, represents new opportunities for those born in 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, and 2013.

All events across the West End are free to attend, making this cultural celebration accessible to everyone enthusiastic to experience the color, energy, and traditions of Chinese New Year.
